Nominations for America's annual Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame have been announced, and some of the biggest names in music are vying for induction in 2008.

Pop icon Madonna heads the list, while other names include New York rappers Beastie Boys, dance diva Donna Summer, heartland rocker John Mellencamp, 70s disco outfit Chic, rap pioneer Afrika Bambaataa, US songwriter Leonard Cohen, surf rockers The Ventures and British Invasion outfit The Dave Clark Five.

Not everyone can make it in, however. Just five acts will be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame during an extravagant ceremony held at New York's Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Monday 10 March, 2008.

More than 500 musicians, industry professionals and journalists in the US vote each year on the inductions.
