American country music legends Brooks & Dunn are calling it quits, after almost 20 years in the business.

The “My Maria” duo – Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn – announced their split on their website yesterday, telling fans that, after a 2010 tour, they’ll be going their separate ways.

“After 20 years of making music and riding this trail together, we have agreed as a duo that it’s time [to] call it a day,” the pair announced. “This ride has been everything and more than we could ever have dreamed. ... We owe it all to you, the fans. If you hear rumours, don’t believe them, it’s just time. “

After forming in 1991, Brooks & Dunn hit the top of the country music charts both in the US and Australia with albums such as Brand New Man (which has sold six million copies) and Steers & Stripes. With two Grammy Awards to their name, they also took out the top spot for 15 years running in the ‘Top Vocal Duo’ category from the Academy of Country Music.

The duo will release a new compilation, #1s… And Then Some, in early September.
