Elvis Presley may have been dead for 32 years (he passed away in 1977 at age 42), but he’s still one of the music world’s most bankable stars: just ask Chicago’s Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, who are set to sell over 200 Presley items this weekend… including a lock of the “Love Me Tender” icon’s hair.
The clump of hair is proving to be the most talked about item on sale in the upcoming memorabilia auction, with all the items coming from the estate of Gary Pepper. A former president of the Elvis Presley Fan Club, Pepper suffered from cerebral palsy and died in 1980, leaving his collection to his nurse, who is now putting the goods up for sale.
The clump of Presley’s is thought to have come from an Army barber, when the late singer went into the army back in 1958. Also up for grabs are clothes, scarves he threw to fans, records he kept in his jukebox, and Christmas cards he sent.
“I’m very careful with the hair I authenticate,” said John Reznikoff, a Connecticut collector who owns samples of hair from George Washington to Abraham Lincoln, Napoleon, Albert Einstein and Marilyn Monroe. “I have a high resolution scan and I took mine (Presley hair sample) out and the coarseness and colour of it, they all match,” he said.
An estimate for the hair is worth AUS$8,800-$13,000.
