While Bono and the Edge from Irish rockers
U2 are busy preparing for their upcoming New York City stage production of “Spider-Man”, another Broadway musical is also in the works: an adaptation of
Green Day’s American Idiot concept album.
Released back in 2004, the smash hit record by the Californian trio of Billie-Joe Armstrong, Tré Dirt and Mike Dirnt was their seventh release, taking home the Grammy that year for Best Rock Album. Selling over 14 million copies, the story behind the album tells the tale of a character nicknamed ‘Jesus Of Suburbia’, an anti-hero who looks for love and freedom when he leaves his hated hometown. The stage production of the record was launched earlier this year by the Berkeley Repertory Theatre – who’ll now make their Broadway debut in early 2010.
“The idiots are coming to New York! Just waiting on when and where!” Tweeted actor John Gallagher Jr., who plays the lead role Johnny in “Idiot”. The musical was the brainchild of
Green Day and Tony Award winning director Michael Maye.
