Rumours have been circulating for months that grunge rockers
Soundgarden were reuniting – and finally the band’s frontman,
Chris Cornell, broke the news on New Years Day.
“The 12 year break is over & school is back in session. Sign up now. Knights of the Soundtable ride again!” read
Cornell’s Twitter account on Friday 1 January, directing fellow Tweeters to the band’s official website, soundgardenworld.com. Once there, people can sign up to a news email, though no other contents of the website are currently available for browsing.
Media reports have since suggested rumoured plans for the legendary “Black Hole Sun” outfit, including a headline appearance at California’s Coachella festival this year, preceded by a US West Coast tour, however nothing has been officially announced.
Back in July 2009,
Cornell quashed rumours about the band’s reunion, telling Rolling Stone magazine, “I want to be open to anything, but nothing has changed in terms of our attitude to it. It takes somebody to really stand up and say, ‘We should do this, we have to go do this, let’s go do this,’ and so far, no one has raised their hand to do that. Still, it’s not impossible.”
Soundgarden originally formed back in 1984 in Seattle, Washington, and became one of the key bands in the grunge music scene which also spawned
Nirvana and
Pearl Jam. The band’s biggest success was the Superunknown album which featured the hit “Spoonman”. They broke up in 1997.
