Two thirds of the Dixie Chicks – sisters Emily Robison and Martie Maguire – have formed a brand new group, called Court Yard Hounds (a reference to the best-selling novel City Of Thieves). The pair say that they keep asking singer Natalie Maines to record a new Dixie Chicks album, but Maines is on an indefinite hiatus – so they formed a new duo, instead. “She wanted a clear cut break,” Maguire told Rolling Stone magazine.

Explaining the formation of Court Yard Hounds, Maguire said, “Emily and I had the itch” to create more music. The new record was made mostly at violinist Maguire’s home studio in Austin, Texas, and features Robison’s first-ever lead vocal performance. Most of the songs, which Robison says “are very personal”, were penned by her after her divorce from fellow country musician Charlie Robison, with whom she has three children.

The duo will make their first live performance as the Court Yard Hounds at music festival South By Southwest (in Austin, Texas) this March. They say they’re hopeful Maines will come to see one of their upcoming live shows.

Jakob Dylan makes a guest appearance on the album, on a track called “See You In The Spring”.
