She’s already made her mark on the music world, and now pop icon Madonna is set to once again lend her name to a new fashion business venture.
The 51-year-old singer/actress has teamed up with US company Iconix Brand Group to launch a new global range, beginning with a “juniors” collection to be unveiled this August at iconic New York City department store Macy. The newly named venture, MG Icon, is half-owned by Madonna and her manager Guy Oseary, and half by Iconix, who’ll license the star’s name to market clothes, shoes and other fashion products.
Madonna’s not the only person behind the new collection, however, which is to be titled ‘Material Girl’, after the singer’s 1984 hit song. Also onboard lending her opinion is 14-year-old daughter Lourdes Leon, the teenager having already been labelled a fashion icon by magazines such as Vogue. Once launched in NYC, the collection will then spread to 200 other Macy stores throughout the US (with no word as yet as to whether it’ll reach Australia).
Says Jeffrey Gennette, Macy’s Chief Merchandising Officer, the line will contain jewellery and other accessories as well as clothes, with prices starting from as little as AUS$13. “We are building this brand to potentially be in every one of (Macy’s doors),” he said. Iconix currently licenses its other clothing brands to chain stores such as Target.
