His band – Manchester rock & rollers Oasis – might be kaput these days, but there’s no stopping the mouth of controversial British singer Liam Gallagher. Just who’s the latest target of the “What’s The Story (Morning Glory)?” frontman – none other than Oasis’ former touring buddies, U2.
According to the 37-year-old Gallagher, he reckons he’s never met anyone who’s actually a fan of the Irish supergroup, or seen albums such as Rattle & Hum or The Joshua Tree in a pal’s record collection.
“I have never seen a U2 fan, not ever. I have never seen anyone with a U2 shirt or been around someone’s house that has a U2 record,” Gallagher told a British journalist over the weekend. “I mean, where do their fans come from? Where are they? I reckon they buy them. With all the money they’ve made, they just bought a load of people and every time they do a gig they get a big old shovel and pile them into their gigs to make them look good.”
Of course, Gallagher’s criticism isn’t too serious – the two bands actually toured together in the past. When U2 were undertaking their Elevation tour back in 2001, lead singer Bono dedicated an encore at a London to his old mate Liam, and was even caught by a snapper in a pretend kiss with the cheeky frontman. At the time Gallagher told British newspaper The Daily Mail, “This was one of the greatest performances I’ve seen. Bono gives 129 per cent – it blew my head off. I couldn’t take my eyes off him. This sets the standard for other bands.”
Following the demise of Oasis, Gallagher has revealed he intends to debut his new band in October 2010.
