Back in the ‘70s, the Miami outfit hit the top of the charts with tracks like “Shake Your Booty” and “Keep It Comin’ Love”. Now Richard R. Finch, one of the co-founders and producers of collective KC And The Sunshine Band, has been arrested on charges relating to having sex with teenage boys.
The 56-year-old musician was arrested earlier this week after a teenager went to Newark police and told them he’d been accosted by the bassist/drummer. Finch later admitted during an interview that he’d been having sex with the boy, and also confessed to relations with other teenagers aged 13 to 17.
Finch kicked off the famous disco outfit with frontman Harry “KC” Casey back in 1973, his bandmate working as a record store clerk when the pair became friends. One of their most famous tunes was 1975’s “That’s the Way (I Like It)”, off their second eponymous album, which peaked at number four in the US.
A message posted on Finch’s website said he will fight the charges. “We will let due process happen through the legal system,” the message said, “and through that, we are sure Mr. Finch will be vindicated from these unfounded allegations.”
KC and the Sunshine Band broke up in 1984, but Casey revived the band in the ‘90s, using no original members whatsoever. Their last album was 2007’s Yummy.
