Arkansas five-piece Evanescence are back in the studio, recording what frontwoman Amy Lee says is “the best album” of her life.
The “Call Me When You’re Sober” outfit, who’ve sold over 15 million records throughout their career so far, are working on the follow-up to 2006’s The Open Door, the longplayer due out in our spring-time. According to Lee, the as-yet-untitled disc has more of “an electric influence” than the chart-topping band’s previous work.
“It wouldn’t be an Evanescence album if it didn’t sound somewhat like Evanescence,” Lee told Billboard of the new tunes. “I feel like our band has always had programming and inspirations from Björk and Depeche Mode and Massive Attack and that kind of thing. It’s not like we’re making one of those records; it’s just, like, that is playing a bigger role in the sound of Evanescence this time. Those little nuances and hints come in in ways that are cool. The sound that we’re going for as a group is to fuse synthetic instruments with organic instruments and create something that sounds like a whole new place. It just sounds larger than life.”
Currently recording in New York, Lee has enlisted the help of producer/percussionist Will ‘Science’ Hunt (as well as the band’s drummer, the similarly-named Will Hunt), describing the new songas as having an “industrial” edge. Producer Steve Lilywhite (U2, Chris Cornell) is also on board.
