One of Seattle’s most famous and successful exponents of grunge back in the ‘90s, the Chris Cornell-led Soundgarden, is tipped to be heading down under in January for an Australian summer tour.

Formed over 20 years ago back in 1984 in the Pacific Northwest, with hits like “Black Hole Sun” and “Spoonman” under their belt the hard rocking four-piece – lead singer Chris Cornell, lead guitarist Kim Thayil, drummer Matt Cameron and bassist Ben Sheppard – sold over eight million records in the USA alone and over 20 million worldwide, before disbanding in 1997. The band helped define the influential Sup Pop label, with records like 1991’s Badmotorfinger and 1994’s Superunknown.

After enjoying a successful solo career, Chris Cornell hinted at a reunion back in January, the band later announcing a return to the stage in April. They recently headlined Chicago’s Lollapalooza festival, just last week. Now, according to a radio report by Triple M music reporter Nui Te Koha, the reunited group will perform to Australian fans this summer. Could the band be set for a slot on the Big Day Out?
After taking a 13 year break, Soundgarden are also releasing a best-of collection in September, titled Telephantasm. The disc will also contain a previously unreleased track, titled “Black Rain”, recorded back during the Badmotorfinger sessions.

Telephantasm will be released Friday 24 September.
