Making their debut this week with a killer album is Melbourne-based electro-pop outfit Miami Horror – the brainchild of writer/bedroom producer Benjamin Plant. The band’s debut LP, Illumination, features 12 new tracks of dancefloor friendly tunes, with most of the album’s parts recorded in Plant’s bedroom.
“You don’t need a lot of gear,” says the “Bravado” singer, when asked about his home studio set-up. “A lot of people get wrapped up in having to deal with multiple, over the top equipment. I’m living in a small room, so my set-up will probably get bigger once I move out.” Having performed recently at festivals such as Splendour In The Grass and with US dates planned for early September, Plant admits he’s nervous but excited as to how the disc will be received by fans.
“I’m pretty excited, I’m pretty sure people will like it... it just depends on how commercial it goes, as to how many people like it, I guess,” he says. “I’m pretty happy with the result. I did tinker forever, that’s why it took so long. And then it got to the point where I actually didn’t want to change anything anymore, which is pretty good.”
As for the title, the singer says it’s all about light and space. “There’s quite a few themes of light on the record – songs called ‘Soft Light, ‘Ultraviolet’, ‘Summersun’, ‘Moon Theory’,” he explains. “Lots of lyrics mention it. So the concept of the album lyrically is light, so what better word than illumination?” The concept of touring the actual record is, he says, another challenge. “We didn’t think at all about taking these songs on the road,” he admits. “The intention was always going to be to make the songs without worrying about how we were going to do it later. There’s a few that are quite hard to play live.”
Illumination is out now.
