For music lovers still unsure how they’re going to celebrate the new year, the return of the annual Pyramid Rock Festival might be a welcome announcement.

Now in its seventh year, the Phillip Island (VIC) event will once again take place in 2010 after a disastrous gig last year, when a huge electrical storm – described by festival organisers as a “once in a hundred year storm” – forced the cancellation of several headlining slots. With new staging and site layout changes, organisers yesterday revealed the first line-up for this year’s event – and there’s some surprises.

Making their way down under in December is Welsh rockers Future Of The Left, while the ‘90s return via revitalised hip-hop crew Arrested Development. Swedes the Shout Out Louds will be dropping by, alongside Londoner Lightspeed Champion and US indie legends Built To Spill, Danish musos Trentemoller and more.

Thinking of last year’s festivalgoers, attendees who saw in 2009 at the festival will be entitled to a discount on this year’s tickets. The rest of the first announcement includes: Neon Indian, Shout Out Louds, Mystery Jets, Xavier Rudd, Basement Birds, Tinie Tempah, Spit Syndicate, Violent Soho, Hungry Kids Of Hungary, Philadelphia Grand Jury, Gypsy and the Cat, the John Steel Singers, Liam Finn, Little Red, Jebediah, Lowrider, Tumbleweed, Horrorshow, Miami Horror, Urthboy and Gyroscope.

The Pyramid Rock Festival runs from Wednesday 29 December 2010 to Saturday 1 January 2011. Tickets go on sale Saturday 19 September.
