She’s not known for her filmmaking prowess, but that hasn’t stopped pop icon Madonna from going straight to the top for research on her upcoming movie project, W.E. – the story of US divorcee Wallis Simpson.

The 52-year-old singer is currently directing a full-length Hollywood production about the famous royal marriage, which saw British King Edward VIII controversially abdicate his throne in order to marry his American partner back in 1936. Dethroned, the king became a Duke, and Wallis was named the Duchess of Windsor.

The singer has been doing substantial research for her biopic, meeting with a selection of royals, including Britain’s Prince Edward and Princess Michael of Kent.

According to a source speaking to The Sun newspaper, she’s also sought help from the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, as well as Buckingham Palace staff and historians.

“When the Palace was contacted by the film company for guidance on historical fact, they were a bit apprehensive at first given the subject,” says the film source. “But when they heard Madonna was behind it they lent their support and arranged for key people to get involved. The entire Royal Family were contacted and asked if they would like to meet Madonna and production staff. Some senior figures turned it down. But others jumped at the chance.”

The film is due for release in late 2011.
