With the US midterm elections taking place yesterday, politics is a hot topic of discussion for many American citizens. None more so than rapper/entrepreneur Jay-Z (real name Shawn Corey Carter), who has hinted that his aspirations stretch bigger than just dominating the music world – he’s thinking of heading into politics.

The 40-year-old “New York State Of Mind” MC, who is married to Beyoncé Knowles, says yesterday’s blow to the Democrats and President Obama – the Republications winning the control of the house of representatives in a huge swing – saw him confessing that he himself might well be up for the top job.

“Give me a chance,” Jay-Z half jokingly told BBC Newsbeat. “Maybe in eight years, I’ll be the president.” The rapper is a vocal Obama supporter, and says that that it was inevitable the politician would experience “peaks and valleys”.

“In order to judge someone, you have to judge what they inherit,” Jay-Z insisted. “He inherited the worst economy, war, just a horrible time in American history. So if we think he can solve that, I mean, we don’t think he’s God, do we. He’s a human being. He’s going to need time to figure that out.”

Jay-Z recently released the story of his life and success, titled Decoded, while he’s also been hard at work on a new collaborative EP with good buddy Kanye West. Jay-Z is due to tour Australia in December as support to U2.
