Nathan Williams, the frontman and creative head honcho of San Diego noise pop band Wavves, has been arrested in Germany, after police found a bag – just one of six, the singer claims – he had in his car.
The quirky singer, who is set to tour Australia for the first time in March 2011, reckons he got off lucky this time, and made light of the hours he spent in a police cell.
“We got stopped at a roadside check and I had six bags in the car and they only found one – the dogs never work,” Williams’ joked to Pitchfork. “I bet it’s high from all the fumes. Anyways, they put me in a cell which was a little nerve-wracking. More so because I was an American in a German jail and not because I have long gay hair. I did wrestle for four years in high school, so I could have f**ked somebody up. So yeah, then I gave em €200 and walked out… not a terrible deal. And now I’m getting high again.”
Wavves’ third studio album, King Of The Beach, has been one of the indie world’s most acclaimed releases of 2010. The singer has made no secret in the past of his penchant for smoking weed. Wiliams also shared the story via his Twitter account, telling fans: “Arrested in Germany by a guy w/ a Metallica patch on his Polizei jacket.
Out on bail fresh out of jail Munich dreamin’ #ridethelightning” – while he also posted a picture of the documentation to prove he was “provisionally arrested.”
Wavves’ Australian tour kicks off on Sunday 6 March at Rocket Bar, Adelaide, SA.
